With its own unique culture, it feels very different from the rest of <a href=\"\/?continent_category=colombia\">Colombia.<\/a> The island was colonized in the 16th century by the British who transferred slaves from Jamaica to grow cotton, corn and tobacco. Most islanders are descendants of these slaves and the language here is Creole as opposed to Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Providencia<\/strong> you can enjoy white bounty beaches and turquoise sea. Rest and relaxation set the rhythm on this remote Colombian island in the <b>Caribbean<\/b> Sea. There are good dive spots and the waters around Providencia are warm, clear and full of life. You can take a tour to the mangroves or take a walk to the volcanic hills inland. A day trip takes you to the nearby island of Santa Catalina with its enchanting beaches and ancient forts.
