Part of the region&#8217;s charm is the melting pot of dialects and culinary traditions, among other things. In addition, the landscapes are strikingly beautiful &#8211; soaring volcanic peaks, green hills dotted with flowers, glistening lakes and deep blue coves. Sao Miguel is the largest of the islands, also called &#8216;the green island&#8217; due to its lush subtropical landscape. Other highlights of the archipelago include the pretty old port town of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira, the vineyards of Pico &#8211; a UNESCO World Heritage Site &#8211; and the golden coast of Santa Maria.
