It is the area of the nomadic Afar, a people who have survived in these harsh conditions for thousands of years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You may not realize it immediately, but you are 120 meters below sea level. The warmth you feel when you are here for some time is because the earth&#8217;s crust here is so thin that fresh lava is constantly pushed up. This heat has also led to the formation of huge salt flats that are difficult to access. Also a source of heat is the Erta Ale, Ethiopia&#8217;s most active volcano.
