{"id":33032,"date":"2020-03-20T09:53:48","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T07:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.untamedtravelling.com\/highlights\/lhasa\/"},"modified":"2021-11-08T16:38:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T14:38:56","slug":"lhasa","status":"publish","type":"highlights","link":"https:\/\/staging.untamedtravelling.com\/en\/destinations\/asia\/tibet\/lhasa","title":{"rendered":"Lhasa"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>LAND OF THE GODS<\/h2>\n<p>High in the mountains of the Himalayas you will find <strong>Lhasa,<\/strong>the spiritual center of the Tibetan Buddhist world and the traditional capital of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.untamedtravelling.com\/en\/asia\/tibet\">Tibet.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ancient city is dotted with the most magnificent monasteries and temples. The oldest Buddhist temple in Tibet, the sacred <strong>Jongkang Temple<\/strong> is a fare for pilgrimage to Lhasa for pilgrims from far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>Before his exile, the Dalai Lama lived here in the impressive white with reddish-brown <strong>Potala<\/strong> &#8216;winter&#8217; Palace. A huge complex where you can see how the great spiritual leader has lived in the countless rooms. In the beautifully \u00a0 landscaped park of the summer residence, the <strong>Norbulingka <\/strong>Palace, there is a lot of entertainment with music, singing and dance in the summer months. Make sure you&#8217;re there during the annual Yogurt or ShotOng festival celebrated here.<\/p>\n<p>Just outside Lhasa are two very special Buddhist monasteries, Drepung and Sera. <strong>Drepung<\/strong> was the largest monastery of all religions in the world and is still of Tibet. The origin of the name <strong>Sera<\/strong> is a mystery. One suspects that the place where this monastery was built was surrounded by an oasis of wild roses, <em>se ra<\/em> in Tibetan.
