In the rio urubamba catchment area, the river that was sacred to the Incas, authentic Indian villages such as <strong>Chinchero <\/strong>and <strong>Ollantaytambo<\/strong>are located on the way from Cuzco to Machu Picchu. The locals honour the ancient traditions and still work the fields with foot ploughs. Spectacular are the terraces in <strong>Maras <\/strong>where salt extraction has been done since the Inca time. The ponchos of the Indians form a beautiful colour contrast with the dazzling white salt pans and the snowy peaks of the <strong>Andes <\/strong>in the background.
