The <strong>Cotacachi<\/strong> (4939 m) and the sacred <strong>Imbabura<\/strong> (4609 m) the colourful city <strong>of Otavalo<\/strong> is 2500 metres away. The city is best known for the markets where cattle, handicrafts, leather work, carvings and textiles are sold. These markets go back to pre-Inca times and the Otavale\u00f1os (inhabitants of Otavalo) are internationally known for their weaving and craftsmanship. Nearby is the beautiful crater lake Cuicocha.<\/p>\n<p>\n Lower down are, on the flanks of the volcanoes, two special nature reserves with cloud forest. The <strong>Mindo and Mashpi<\/strong> national parks have a specific flora from bromeliads to many orchid species, more than 500 bird species and many butterflies. Also bigger game as monkeys and cougars have their home in these unique areas.<\/p>\n<p>\n In the northern Andes area is also one of the most special and oldest haciendas in South America.
