The city was founded at the foot of two hills where silver was found. After the independence of Bolivia (August 6, 1825), the city was given its current name <strong>Sucre<\/strong>on August 11 of that year. It was named after Antonio Jos\u00e9 de Sucre who fought with the freedom fighter <strong>Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar<\/strong> for independence. Today, sucre&#8217;s Old Town is considered the best preserved Spanish colonial city in South America, with many white buildings and churches (hence the nickname &#8220;La Ciudad Blanca&#8221;). Like the La Recoleta monastery with beautiful patios.
