A third of the total population of Costa Rica (popularly called Ticos) lives in San Jos\u00e9. After tobacco, the coffee industry also brought prosperity to the city and today it is the most cosmopolitan city in Central America. There are countless shopping malls and restaurants, lively markets and an exclusive nightlife. In addition, there are also colonial remains, of which the <strong>Teatro Nacional<\/strong> is a fine example, and several interesting museums.
