Mount Kilimanjaro has become a trademark of Africa. With its snowy mountain top, this highest mountain in Africa towers powerfully above the surrounding lowlands. The ascent of Kilimanjaro is worth while just because of the variety of landscapes and the phenomenal views. During the climb you will walk through different vegetation zones. The lower parts of the slopes are dotted with fields, followed by tropical rainforest with beard mosses, orchids and streams. Higher up you will find moorlandscapes with giant lobelias and giant crucifixes and eventually you will walk on snow along walls of ice. Be advised which climbing route is best suited for you (Machame, Marangu… anything is possible).

Mount Meru in Arusha

Not only the ascent of Kilimanjaro is worth it. The nearbyMount Meru, in Arusha N.P., is a picture of landscape. At 4566 metres, Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. The flanks of the mountain are dominated by lichen-covered trees, in which Colobus monkeys swing. At the foot of the mountain, with sharply jagged crater edges, lie the Momella lakes in which hundreds of flamingos live.

Also the sacred mountain of the Masai, Ol Doinyo Lengai can be climbed. Ol Doinyo Lengai is a still active volcano of almost 3000m. The ascent along the steep slopes is spectacular. Geysers, steam and black lava make for an unforgettable spectacle.

[221
601
186
post-33703","highlights","type-highlights","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","country-tanzania","highlight_category-activiteit-en","continent_category-africa
["GET
