The low-lying old town of <strong>Baixa, <\/strong>which sits next to the country&#8217;s main port, is characterised by narrow streets and old colonial buildings. Visit the <strong>National Anthropological Museum,<\/strong>the Eiffel-built <strong>Ferro Palace,<\/strong>the ornate Baroque church <strong>Nosa Senhora de Nazare,<\/strong> <strong>Hotel Grande Universo<\/strong> and the special open-air market <strong>Roque Santeiro.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The high-altitude part of the city, <strong>Cidade Alta,<\/strong>was the place where the Portuguese settled in the sixteenth century. Go back in time during a visit to the <strong>Fort Sao Miguel<\/strong> they built, which houses the Military Museum.
